Suzuki specializes in manufacturing compact automobiles (cars) and motorcycles after entering the automobile industry in 1955. The company is also known for its motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), outboard marine engines, and wheelchairs. Suzuki is the 9th largest automaker by global production.Suzuki was founded by Michio Suzuki (1887–1982) on 10 October 1909, originally manufacturing looms and other machines for weaving. Beginning in 1918, Suzuki created a series of new inventions and patented technologies, which in the end led them to a new product, the automatic powerloom, in 1927, which made them one of the leading companies in the Japanese silk industry. The company's first 30 years were all about the development and production of manual and automatic weaving looms, most of which were sold to the silk industry in Japan. The early evolution of the company from looms to automobiles is comparable to the early development of Nissan, and can be compared to that of Toyota and General Motors.Suzuki began to research and develop three-wheeled vehicles in 1937, which went into production in 1940.
